The insular character of the County is represented by the Island lapped by conventional waves of the sea upon which the remainder of the achievement is based. Carisbrooke Castle and the Royal associations of the Island are suggested by the Castle on the Shield. The Supporters of the Shield, in the forms of a horse and a sea horse, symbolise Agriculture and the Sea which have supported and conditioned the life of the Island in such a multitude of ways. The sea is further symbolised by the blue or 'azure' of the Shield and by the anchors. Surmounting the helmet will be seen the 'mural crown,' an embattled wall in the semblance of a crown. This in heraldry is the distinguishing mark of a local authority.
This crest was, unfortunately, taken out of use a few years ago when the Isle of Wight unitary authority was set up.
